In the West African region, the focus is on increasing the proportion of local content by procuring goods and services in accordance with Procurement Lists (published annually) by the Minerals Commission of Ghana, which at present target 29 discrete categories of spend.

Spread across an area of 23,666ha, the Damang Gold mine is located 30km north of Tarkwa in South West Ghana. The mine is owned and operated by Abosso Goldfields (AGL), which is owned by Gold Fields Ghana Holdings (71.1%), IAMGOLD (18.9%) and the Ghanaian Government (10%). The processing plant at Damang mine has an annual throughput of 5.1Mtpa.

With Gold Fields' acquisition of IAMGold's indirect 18.9% stake in the Damang Gold Mine in June 2011 Gold Fields now owns 90% of the issued shares of AGL, with the Ghanaian government owning the remaining 10% free carried interest.
Alfred returned to Ghana in 2007 to head the Mining Department of the Damang Mine, and was appointed General Manager of the mine in November 2008. He became the General Manager of the Tarkwa Mine in 2010 and subsequently, the Vice President of Operations for both mines.
